Disney Rankings: Encanto (2022)

Not going to lie here, I've become a bit obsessed with this movie's (Encanto) soundtrack. This post will contain SPOILERS, so if you have any intention or interest in watching it on DisneyPlus, then I'd recommend you watch the movie first to save yourself the regret. Before I get into the rankings however, I will give a very brief overview of what Encanto is all about: the main character that this story centers around is Mirabel Madrigal. She comes from a big, intermixed family who resides in the deep mountains of Colombia, several years later after the attack of the Conquistadors.

This movie very much centered around magic, and each member of the Madrigal family has a special gift or "super power", if you will. But what about Mirabel? What's her gift, or why wasn't she given one? Essentially, this is what this movie explores as she tries to save her family from the very magic that starts to crumble and fall apart.

With that explanation out of the way, here's my ranking for each song and why, working my way from number 8 to number 1.

8. All of You- sung by the main cast of the film plus some accompanying vocals that represent the outside community members, this song takes place just after the Madrigal household has fallen to shambles and the magic has faded out. Now don't get me wrong here; the message of the song is very encouraging and I still enjoy different elements of the song's composition. The harmonies are perfectly in tandem, and the way that each character grows and develops definitely leaves you with this very rosy feeling that lets us know that we've reached the exposition. It fits well with the typical Disney formula of story-telling, but that's also why this song is placed so far down; it just feels unrealistic. For a family that's intermixed, and in knowing the very important messages that Encanto encompasses when it comes to the importance of family, we can't overlook how these characters interact with each other in times of conflict and see the very real social consequences that are caused because of this. From my perspective, when trying to understand the cultural family dynamics combined with my innate curiosity in human psychology, there's a lot of blaming that gets tossed around, especially in the scene that happens right before the house crumbles when Mirabel and her Abuela Alma are arguing with each other. This is just one example, but I'll dive more into this "family therapist" type of perspective later in other songs' rankings.

7. Columbia, Mi Encanto- With this song in particular, not only does it become a very festive song that puts you in a good mood, it also just gives a great representation of Colombian culture. If you weren't already aware of this, Lin Manuel Miranda basically titles this one song as his love letter to the country of Colombia. In knowing that, it just makes me feel even more immersed into the film and its cultural beauty, like I'm part of the family as well, or at least, like I've become lucky enough to witness "life as a Madrigal", to put it simply. There's really nothing that I can criticize about this one song... It kind of just sits as an outlier if you will, given its appropriateness to the movie's nod of respect to Colombian culture.

6. Waiting On A Miracle- When looking at this from Disney's earlier history with princess songs, it's hard for me to see this as a song that can easily stand out from the others. Stephanie Beatriz really does give a very heartfelt performance, and the lyrics are something that can't be overlooked. Mirabel's character feels out of place with her family as she's watched them from the sidelines for quite some time, and through singing this song, she comes to terms with the pain she's been hiding deep down inside. It's honestly relatable in some ways for me, so I can't say that my ranking is based solely on lyrics or delivery in Beatriz's performance. Undeniably, it's a beautiful song, but it just feels perfectly in line with what Disney has done in the past. That's all.

5. Dos Oruguitas (translated to "two butterflies")- What can I say about this song that makes it perfect for the heartbreak and pain that Abuela Alma experiences? Part of me does want to rank this song higher because not only is it beautifully sung, but because it fits in so perfectly with the whole sequence of Alma and Pedro's relationship and marriage. I guess it's just the sad undertone that makes this song get ranked right in the center, knowing that Alma had to pick herself up and try to survive after having her husband taken away from her so soon.

4. What Else Can I Do?- The differences in Mirabel and Isabella's personalities honestly make this song so fun and interesting for me. There's this underlying tone of jealousy/envy and misunderstanding on Mirabel's side as she feels like she's never gotten to know her sister before she was given her gift. We can't fault her for how she feels, but I guess this is the one reason why I place this song as my 4th favorite. The dynamic between these two characters is very complex, but outside of that, the lyrics are very memorable and catchy. It's also very sweet when Mirabel's perspective starts to shift midway through the song as Isabella starts to let down her guard, saying that she's "sick of being pretty" and wants something true. Overall, it's a great song.

3. The Family Madrigal- The humor in this song for me lies within the smaller implications of some lyrics, like when Mirabel takes away a coffee cup from a child because of his jittery nature when saying "Just tell us what everyone can do!". Another one that's rather spoken instead of sung is towards the end when the kids keep screaming "Mirabel!" because they know that she's part of the Madrigal family and should be recognized, and yet, Mirabel continues to avoid talking about herself because of her not having a super awesome gift. The amount of energy this song has just makes it very fun, catchy and contagious, and so for that, I'd make this my 3rd favorite song.

2. Surface Pressure- There is honestly so much I could unload when it comes to how much I adore this song, but for starters, can we just appreciate the vocal versatility of Jessica Darrow? The only other time where I've heard a woman sing with such a sultry or masculine tone while also trying to make her feel feminine is when I've listened to any song from Halestorm. Nonetheless, the voice actor for Luisa does a perfect job displaying that vocal contrast in this song. I've listened to "Surface Pressure" multiple times, and while it wasn't clear to me the first time I heard it within the movie, if you listen very closely, you'll notice that there's only a build up in the song's pace from a instrumental perspective. The only time there's a break in that musical tension is when Luisa is placed in a pink version of her safe haven, away from all the stress, pressure and expectations that are placed onto her from her family. It's just little details like that that make me appreciate this song even more.

1. We Don't Talk About Bruno- Every time I listen to this song, I realize that while it's unavoidable to sing about Bruno, I also can't stop talking about Bruno either as a character within this movie. I have to admit that when looking at his character alone and what his magical gift is, he's treated as the black sheep of the family simply because the rest of his family sees his ability of seeing into the future as something to fear, or as something that they struggle to understand and accept. Is Bruno really a burden to the Madrigal family though? If you listen closely enough to Pepa's lines when explaining the events of her marriage to Felix, you might think that she's overreacting to a simple joke that Bruno was trying to make, albeit, it may have been made at the wrong time. There's also a lot of debate and discussion around the tone of Dolores' lines in this song. Is she sympathetic to how Bruno feels, being ostracized by his own family following his disappearance? If I were in her shoes, I'd be more than sympathetic about his situation, living inside the walls of the house and only having rats as his form of entertainment and company. Truly, with the Madrigal family having so many people living together, I feel like Bruno's existence within this family dynamic feels eerily similar to what Mirabel faces in the events of this movie. Both of them share that feeling of not belonging, or thinking that they're not good enough to meet the expectations of their family members, especially that of Abuela Alma's. I honestly could go on and on about certain perspectives that go beyond than what lies on the surface with this movie in particular since there's so much going on. Overall though, this song is a definite favorite for me in more reasons than one!

Novella #4: Mysteries In Love (part 4)

CHAPTER 10: MISTER PERFECT

Since that night with Adam, Anna hasn’t been able to concentrate on much of anything. No matter how hard she tried, her mind would somehow find its way back towards that moment of her and Adam being together in bed, exploring each other’s bodies and making love with each other. The whole situation just felt so surreal to her, and deep down, part of her just wanted to see him again. She couldn’t remember the last time she felt that way with anybody, and she knew those moments from the past with her ex-husband were very rare. Just as she decided to pick up her phone from the side table, she felt a headache coming on and threw herself onto the couch, letting her phone slip from her hand.

FIVE YEARS AGO

Seth had never given much thought about the marriage at the time of him and Anna being together, but some nights, he would lock himself in the basement of their house and just ruminate on every possible thought. Am I doing everything right? Does Anna really love me? It feels like she doesn’t know me or trust me enough… The more he dwelled on these thoughts, the more confused he would feel, which only led to anger and frustration. He knew that Anna would always encourage him to communicate his feelings as she wanted to be there for him, but partially due to fear, he would always keep quiet since he felt she wouldn’t understand. On this night in particular, he just couldn’t get a good grasp on his feelings and didn’t know how to deal with them.

If there’s anything that Seth remembered after waking up and getting back on his feet, it’s that he wanted Anna to stay with him. He wanted her to see that he still cares, even if he struggles to express it in words. He was never taught how to use his words in a loving manner due to some childhood trauma of his own, and so this often placed feelings of doubt within him more often than not. All that Seth knows is that he loves Anna and wants this marriage to last. As soon as he figured out that she wasn’t anywhere to be found in the house, he felt utterly helpless.

PRESENT DAY

Adam never knew he could feel as close to someone as he did with Anna since that night, but for most of the week, he felt like he was on top of the world. Nothing could bring him down; not even the sounds of his friends bickering over which game to play, or the funny looks he got from his co-workers whenever he smiled to himself. The way she kissed him made it feel like she understood him completely, and he knew that he wanted to be as open and honest as possible about his intentions towards her. Even just remembering her name made him feel like he was floating on a cloud, like he had all the confidence in the world. I hope I’m not getting too ahead of myself, he said to himself. He knew he wanted to see Anna again, and so after his shift, he decided to head over to her house. Just as he knocked on the door however, the person who opened it wasn’t Anna. He actually didn’t recognize the person at all until he introduced himself. “My apologies for the lack of introduction, young sir. I had to come in on short notice. You can call me Keith.”
“It- it’s nice to meet you, Keith. Is everything okay with Anna?” He glanced past Keith’s shoulder to see Anna laying on the couch, looking pale and unresponsive. “How long has she been like this?”
“It’s hard to say. I don’t even know what caused this, but my guess is that she probably experienced some sort of trauma response or just felt faint, like some sort of dizziness or became light-headed.” Adam didn’t know how to respond to this, but based on how the man spoke, it seemed as if he knew more about Anna to come to such conclusions. “Um, sir? Can I ask what your relation is to Anna?”
“The two of us used to be neighbors back before she moved here. I guess in some ways, you can say I was the only real family she had. I took her in after understanding her situation with the ex-husband, but that story is not mine to share. I got there as soon as I could to be a source of comfort to her after what happened, and it seems like I’m having a case of deja vu in this situation now. My phone rang and I saw Anna’s name pop up on the caller ID, but she wasn’t saying anything on her end. I guess you can say she dialed my number without realizing it.” The two men sat down on either side of the couch with Anna laying down in between them, and Keith gently took her head and let her rest on his lap, fervently stroking her shoulder. “She’s been through a lot, you know. I hope she’ll find it in her to tell you soon. I’m just here to help until she gets back up on her feet.”
“You care about her a lot, don’t you?” Adam’s eyes darted back and forth between Anna and Keith, and just as he was about to stand up, Keith spoke up. “She’s pretty much like a daughter to me. I never had any kids, so please, be patient and gentle with her. I feel like I can’t stress that enough.”
“I- I’ll do the best I can, sir.” Keith offered Adam a half smile then shut the door behind him as he left, which woke Anna up from where she was laying on the couch. “Did Adam stop by? I wanted to see him.”
“You’ll see him again soon. Take it easy there, okay? You were lying unconscious for quite a while. Probably for about an hour, give or take.” Anna gave Keith a small smile, and he smiled towards her as he made his way back to the couch. “Thank you for showing up,” she said in a small voice. At that moment as he sat down, Keith kissed Anna on the forehead and let her fall asleep in his lap.

CHAPTER 11: CONVERSATIONS & CONNECTIONS

It was getting late at night, and Adam knew that he should be back at his own place in his own bed, but loneliness got the better of him, and so he and Anna were together yet again. This time however, he felt the need to keep his distance. Part of him was still mulling over the encounter he had with Keith the other day, and he knew Anna wouldn’t know anything about it unless he said something. Where would I start though?, he asked himself. Does she even remember dialing his number by accident? Adam started to feel nervous, and this raised concern within Anna. “Is everything okay? You seem off…”

“I’m fine.” Would I rather just sleep it off, or should I just tell her now? The questions continued to swirl around in his mind, and Anna could tell that he was keeping something from her. The more he tried to shut off his mind, the colder the air started to feel. Anna’s touch was gentle on his bare back, and as much as he enjoyed it deep down, he still felt anxious. “You can trust me, Adam. I’m here for you.” The minute she spoke those words, a surge of nausea flooded her senses, but she tried to keep herself steady. She took in a deep breath, slowly breathing in and out through her nose and mouth. She genuinely cared for Adam and wanted him to confide in her, hoping deep down that whatever he was dealing with would be something she could handle. Just as she was about to give up her patience and go to sleep, Adam turned around to face her, his expression displaying obvious signs of distress. “When I came by to see you the other day, you were pale and unresponsive. You didn’t answer the door, but Keith did. Do you remember anything from that day?” Anna’s expression was dumbfounded, which pretty much answered that question for him. It took her a minute to form any sort of response, but after sitting in silence for a few slow minutes, she said, “the only thing I remember is seeing Keith. I was surprised to see him, but also happy. How long was I out for?”
“About an hour. Keith alluded to something as to why you stayed unconscious for so long, talking about trauma responses and such, and he told me that I should be patient and gentle with you.” Adam didn’t say anything more after that as he hoped she would have an explanation for the things that were said then. When she didn’t respond however, he kindly asked, “is there something I should know about you, Anna? I feel like I’m being left out on a big secret, or some piece of your past that’s never seen the light of day…”.

About thirty minutes passed, and Anna was stunned speechless, not knowing how to form words about what Adam had just proposed to her. Her own mental and emotional triggers are something that she’s barely able to understand, and they come at times that feel the most random to her. Getting headaches is something that happens only sometimes, but not frequently. Her last panic attack happened when Seth showed up out of nowhere to visit her, and on the rare occasion, she’ll get nauseous if she tries to think back on a memory that’s not pleasant in the slightest. Is something wrong with me? It feels like I can’t recall any memories from my past relationship… she pondered to herself. Adam continued to look at her with curious eyes, wondering what could possibly be going on inside her head. He wondered if he had struck a nerve, or perhaps he was too direct in what he asked of her. He tried being kind and gentle, but considering the way Anna was processing this, he had to question if this was worth bringing up at all. “Look, I’m sorry if I placed any sort of trouble onto you. You don’t have to answer my question if you don’t want to. Should we just get some rest now? It’s almost 1 in the morning.”
“That’s probably a good idea. I’m sorry I wasn’t of much help to you.”
“It’s okay. We’ll blame it on me being too curious or nosy.”
“You shouldn’t have to blame yourself, though. No one has ever asked me about my past…” She drifted off into her own thoughts again for a moment, but quickly shook them off. “I’m glad that you care enough to ask me. If you’re still interested, perhaps we can discuss this in the morning or on the phone during your next break at work. I’m better at telling stories during the day or over texts.”
“Are you sure? I really don’t want to upset you in any way. You deserve to have some sense of privacy.” Adam was mumbling between yawns, and Anna had to listen closely since she knew he was starting to doze off. “I’m positive,” she said with a smile. She gently placed one hand on his shoulder, the other one curled up beside her chest. As she drifted off the sleep, the one thing that stayed in her mind was this one moment of connection, which made her feel both happy and vulnerable. How much am I willing to share with Adam?, she thought to herself before falling asleep. I know I remember some things, but other parts still feel blocked off… It’s not like I don’t want to remember… That last thought made Anna feel this small twinge of fear inside of her, which instead of making her feel relieved for finally confronting this, actually led her to shed some tears in her sleep, for she knew deep down that confronting her past would mean revisiting old wounds.

CHAPTER 12: THE SECRET

“I got married young. Straight out of high school to be exact. I guess you can say that Seth and I knew each other well enough for the age we were at at the time, but I didn’t think things would feel different once it happened when we committed ourselves to each other. It’s like there was this invisible weight sitting on my shoulders, and all I wanted was to be a good partner and wife for him; perhaps Seth was in a similar position, but I could never tell for certain. He had his days where he would feel distant from me, like he didn’t want to share anything with me or was unwilling to seek that deeper connection. I truly did love him and cared about him. Probably more than I should have, all things considered. I kind of feel bad for allowing myself to stay for so long, especially when things between us started to fall apart.”

“How long did you two stay together?” Adam asked. Both he and Anna were sitting in a coffee shop, sitting in a booth far away from most of the crowd who would come in and out for their caffeine fix for the day. The weather was gloomy and rainy with hardly any trace of the sun in the sky, and neither one of them wanted to stay at home for the entire day. “We were married for three years, but we dated each other for about two years in junior and senior year of high school. One of my girlfriends at the time introduced me to him because she knew I liked him, but I could never find the strength to go up and talk to him. My crush on him lasted much longer than the amount of time we spent dating if I’m being honest here.” Anna started to blush, and Adam softly placed his hand on hers while smiling in her direction. “It’s nothing to be embarrassed or ashamed of. I’ve had plenty of crushes myself, but they never amounted to anything.” Anna smiled meekly, then she started to speak again. “Is there anything else you want to know about me?”
“I am curious to know how your sister came to know about this. You said she left to go to college at the time of you getting married, right?”
“That’s right. I can’t recall all of those details, but I remember overhearing bits and pieces of a conversation that Mr. Keith had over the phone. After I was taken in, both Keith and his wife made it their mission to make sure I felt safe, and they asked me if I had any other family in town who would be worried about me. I told them about my sister then, so I guess you can say she found out through them. I’m so grateful for the amount of help and hospitality they extended to me. They really became strong parental figures for me at that time of my life.” Anna started to smile as she relayed her thoughts and feelings on that memory, and Adam smiled in return. “I’m not religious by any means, but if I’m being honest, sometimes I feel like my relationship with Keith and his wife just came at the perfect time. It’s like it was meant to be. I felt safe and loved.”
“I’m glad that they were able to help support you, Anna. I have a couple more questions left for you, one of which is tied to why this one memory holds such a special place in your heart. I’m not sure how to word it, but what happened in the amount of time before being placed in their care and your marriage ending?” Anna took in a deep breath and closed her eyes. She knew that this question would come eventually, but still, she had to prepare herself mentally and emotionally before answering it. Adam’s eyes took in every second of this moment, trying his best to remain kind, gentle and patient as she took her time to find her words. At one point, his eyes drifted from her gaze to the bustle of their environment, seeing each new person walk into the shop and watching those in groups talk among themselves. “Adam?” Anna snapped her fingers in front of his face. “Earth to Adam!”
“Oh! Sorry. Just lost my focus for a moment. Do you feel ready to answer now?”
“Yes. However, I’m starting to feel a little nervous. Can we head outside and talk there?”
“Sure thing.” As the two of them got up out of their seats, Adam let Anna walk in front of him. She threw away her trash first then opened up the front door, and he followed out behind her. Minutes later, they were sitting on a bench that was hidden by some trees, which was conveniently placed on the other side of where Adam parked his car. “Seth raped me.” The statement made Adam raise an eyebrow in surprise and shock. When Anna looked at his expression, she immediately started to form questions in her mind, wondering if she was too direct or blatant with how she answered his question. “I’m sorry… I didn’t know how else to answer the question.”
“No, it’s okay. I know my reaction wasn’t exactly subtle… I’m sorry that happened to you, Anna.” His eyes went from turning wide to becoming more narrow, almost like he was about to cry. “Are you okay, Adam? I didn’t mean to upset you…”
“It’s okay, Anna. I’m a very sensitive person, especially when it comes to other people and understanding them on an emotional level. I feel for you so much. I had no idea, and so for that, I guess you can say that you’ve opened up my heart more. You deserve better, and it all makes sense now.” After having said that, he instinctively wrapped his arms around her in a tight hug, which struck Anna as odd for a moment, but she welcomed it and hugged him back. Once they parted from the long hug, Adam confidently leaned in to kiss her on the lips. She could feel the amount of passion in the way he kissed her; it’s like he wanted to make it known that he loves her and wants her to feel valued. The deeper each kiss became, the harder it became for Anna to keep her composure. So much unexpected gratitude started to fill in her chest and she started to cry while smiling at him. “Why are you crying?” Adam asked with deep concern.
“Because I- umm…,” she paused for a moment before finishing her sentence. She kept her hands over her face, trying to stop the tears from flowing. Once she finally was able to catch her breath and stopped crying, she started to speak again. “I haven’t been able to say it since my first marriage. That version of love felt so different. It was constricting, like I wasn’t able to be myself around him. I wasn’t able to do a lot of things… WIth you, I feel so free. I feel like that weight has finally been lifted off my shoulders. I… I love you, Adam.” Her head was starting to spin, so she reached out to hold his hand. The two of them smiled at each other in a way that felt so real and genuine. “I feel so happy and grateful for this moment we’re sharing right now, Adam. I don’t think you know how much being here with you means to me.”

CHAPTER 13: SETH

Two months ago when he visited Anna, he thought he knew what it was he wanted, and part of him still feels like he messed up his one chance. What stuck out the most though is that she never questioned how he was able to find her. Back home in Connecticut, people aren’t exactly shy when it comes to knowing the whereabouts of others. It’s a blessing and a curse since rumors tend to float around a bit too often, and it’s about half and half as to which ones end up being true. It was like a stroke of good fate when he overheard an older couple talking about Anna and how she moved from their small town to another state. He confronted them and asked where exactly she moved to, and while they showed some hesitancy, they were willing enough to give him the information he needed.

He took a bus to his designated stop, which overall, took about five hours. His intention was to just pick up where they left off, but when he saw Anna face to face on her doorstep, every last thought he had in his mind just vanished, so he decided to just play it safe and make small talk. When she had her panic attack, he thought that was his cue to leave, the guilt and shame coming back to the surface and leaving him to feel defeated. Deep down, he always felt like he didn’t deserve her as soon as they said their private vows to each other in the backyard of their neighbor’s house. They were too young to understand anything about marriage, and they couldn’t afford the expenses of a real wedding, and so in reality, the only legal proof they had of a marriage was a piece of paper that was signed by their neighbor Keith. Anna had pleaded her case to him, asking for him to at least call someone in the city council who can make it legal and official. Judging by the tone of his voice as he was eavesdropping near the side of his house, Seth could tell that Keith wasn’t completely on board with their decision, but he cared enough to know that he wanted to see Anna happy.

Seth never left the state to head back home after seeing Anna in her new house. He wanted to try again; he wanted to make things right. His confidence feeling a little shaky, he had to question whether or not he wanted to go through with this. He shook away the thought as he took in a deep breath, forcing the doubts and questions away. He still loves Anna. The guilt and shame he’s carried for this long is enough to have him make this decision. He just needed to find the right moment to catch Anna off guard. All he wants to do is talk to her. All he wants to do is apologize for not being a good enough partner for her. If she can forgive him, perhaps then he can carry on and move forward with his life. After sitting on the couch of his apartment for what seemed like an eternity, getting lost in his thoughts, he finally stood up and hurriedly left the apartment, forgetting to lock the door behind him.

ANNA

For the first time since the night of the party, Anna decided that she wanted to spend time with Adam at his house. His friends had mixed reactions at the thought, but once they talked about it, they decided to give her a chance. “You have to remember, Adam. None of us (except for Steve) have ever been around girls growing up, so this is new for us. We’ll try to make ourselves scarce, though. I know the two of you probably want to be alone.” Chase gave him a half reassuring smile then headed towards the kitchen to grab some snacks. Looking in Anna’s direction as she drifted around the space, he said to him, “she definitely looks like a keeper. I can see why you took an interest in her.” He gave a sly look and Adam rolled his eyes. “Goodbye now,” he said as he opened the door to the basement, pretending to kick his friend from behind. Once he shut the door, he walked up to Anna and said, “Do you want something to drink? We have soda, and there’s a water dispenser built into the fridge. I apologize for not having any other healthy options…”. She chuckled softly and responded, “I’m good for right now, but thanks. I think I’ll just sit down.”
“Make yourself at home then. I’ll be back in a few minutes.” She nodded without turning in his direction, getting lost in her surroundings. Adam headed towards the basement, and just as the door clicked shut, there was a knock at the front door. Did they order pizza or something? Anna asked herself. Just as she was about to walk up to the door, it opened by itself and she stood frozen, her expression moving away from curiosity to becoming agitated. Since no one heard the knock from the basement, she decided to quietly leave the house and shut the door behind her. “So first you decide to just randomly stop by my house, and now you’re here at Adam’s doorstep? I thought you left to go back home. That’s what you should have done. Why are you here, Seth?”
“I just wanted to talk…” When he didn’t say anything else to follow up that statement, Anna crossed her arms in front of her chest and said, “Okay. Talk.”
“I’m sorry,” he said in refute. “I’m sorry for treating you so badly. I’m sorry for putting you in a place of absolute terror and vulnerability. I’m sorry for never taking the time to consider if you felt happy or comfortable around me. I’ve felt great shame and guilt since waking up from what happened… I know I’ve caused a lot of damage and harm, but I just wanted to see you again.” He went silent again. He wasn’t prepared for any of this, and based on his current state of mind- as frazzled as it was- upon seeing her up close, he could feel himself coiling up into a shell of who he was back then, like nothing has changed for him. “I’m not good enough for you, am I?”
“You’re just now realizing that?” The question struck him, leaving him confused and dumbfounded. “What does that mean?”
“Look at you, Seth. You’re a mess. I’ll bet you stayed here because you had a plan in mind to win me back, but instead, here you are spilling your guts out. I’ve finally moved on. I’m here on a date with Adam. It’s time for you to move on as well.”
“Wait, you’re dating someone new now?”
“Yes, I just told you that.” Anna hesitated, but she inched closer towards her former partner only to see his eyes looking swollen like he hasn’t slept in months. He also had a slight odor that lingered around him, and she took a step backwards to maintain her distance. “Go home. That’s not a request this time. If you don’t, then I’m calling the cops.”
“Is that really necessary? I missed you… I still love you.”
“Well I don’t love you anymore.” Anna paused for a moment as she replayed what she just said in her mind. She seemed to be surprised by her own words, like she had just found some strength to stand against the man who once made her feel so weak and small. “That’s right. I don’t love you anymore,” she said again. And just before she shut the door in his face, she looked him dead in the eyes and said firmly, “Go home, Seth. You have no business being here. We’re done. For good.”

Novella #4: Mysteries In Love (part 3)

CHAPTER 5: DATES

Since that day when Anna kissed Adam, he’s been pondering the idea of whether or not to take her on a date. He has no experience with dating or relationships, and so the idea of being alone with her left him with a million questions swirling around in his head. What if she doesn’t feel the same way? Should I even be doing this, asking her out? I don’t know what I’m doing…. Just as Adam was about to open the door to his house, Steve showed up in view and he opened it before Adam could. “What’s up, man? Are you alright?”
“I’m fine. Just have a lot on my mind.”
“Well, is there anything I can do to help?”
“I’m not sure.” The two guys sat down on the couch and didn’t speak for a moment. Adam then parted his lips to ask a question, but was interrupted by Chase who plopped right in between him and Steve on the couch. “So, what’s new with everyone? I’m bored.”
“Good to see you too, Chase.” Adam retorted. “Why are you here though? I thought you had to go to your night class.”
“Oh, well, I dropped out.” Adam didn’t seem all that surprised in hearing Chase say this, but Steve did raise an eyebrow in concern. “Why would you drop out of community college after only being there for three weeks? I think that’s a new record between you and Adam combined.” Steve laughed at his own witty comment, but Adam wasn’t amused. He thumped Steve in the head, which led to him tackling Adam to the ground. Even though both guys are around the same height and weight (give or take a few pounds), Adam doesn’t have much upper body strength. Steve pinned Adam in less than five minutes, keeping one of his legs suspended in mid air when Chase pulled the two of them apart. “Guys, now isn’t a good time to goof off. I’m seriously starting to think that something is wrong with me.” Adam gets back to his feet with Chase’s help and says, “There’s nothing wrong with you, man. I’ve known you since elementary school. You’re smart like me. Remember how both of us were enrolled into that dual student program with the scholarship opportunity?”
“Well yeah, but I never actually went through with it. You also made that same decision if I remember correctly.” Steve stared at his two friends in sudden confusion, wondering why both of them turned down such a great opportunity. The less I say, the better, he thought to himself. “I’m going to get something to drink. Do either of you want something?”
“Not right now, but thanks.” Chase stood up from the couch, and Adam followed Steve into the kitchen. The kitchen area in this house is not as big as what he saw in Anna’s house, but it’s a comfortable size. The living room takes up the most space, which makes a great feature for hosting parties. The 'common space', as Chase calls it, is adjacent to the living room from the right which holds all of their gaming equipment. Beyond the kitchen is their back courtyard, the front door of that room being placed on the right wall. What really sold the three guys into buying this house was that the entire kitchen space had high glass windows, giving them the perfect view of the courtyard and pool, which can be seen from any angle.

No plans had officially been made for this date that Adam had in mind, but he knew that this is something he wanted to do, or was he rushing things a bit? Laying down in bed with all the lights off, he realized that he just couldn’t sleep. Too many thoughts and questions continued to plague his mind. Why did Anna kiss me? Girls are a mystery to me… I’ve never been on a date in my entire life. Adam sat up in bed to shake his head, his curls bouncing around his head in small, circular motions. He got back under the covers, hoping to fall asleep, but he just couldn’t. In a fuss with himself, he decided to get up and slowly walk over to Steve’s bedroom, making sure to not make any sound. He shut the bedroom door behind him as he walked in to find Steve laying on his side. He wasn’t wearing a shirt, and his short blond hair looked like little tufts on the back side of his neck. Adam crept closer and gently tapped his shoulder, but Steve didn’t move a muscle. He tapped his shoulder again then heard a moan, and so this encouraged him to nudge his shoulder a bit harder. Steve rolled over, but his eyes were still closed. Damn, he's a really hard sleeper, Adam thought to himself. Just as he thought about giving up for the night, Steve rolled over again and stuck his leg out from under the sheets. This position didn’t work in his favor as he kicked his leg against the bedpost and fell to the floor. “Steve!” Adam yelled out in a whisper. “Huh? What happened to me?” Adam looked at Steve with an amused half-smile and responded, “you fell. Next time, keep your leg under the covers.”
“Why are you in my room? It’s 2:30 in the morning.”
  “I couldn’t sleep.”
“So?”
  “So… Can we talk?”
“I guess. What do you want to talk about?”
“The new girl.” The minute Steve heard those three words, he seemed to perk up a little, got up from the floor and went back into bed. “Here, come sit.” He patted the empty spot next to him and Adam got into bed beside him. “So what’s the problem?”
  “Anna kissed me.”
“Oh… where did she kiss you?”
“On the cheek. I’ve been up for most of the night, trying to figure out why she did that and wondering if I should ask her out. Or is that too bold of a move? I’m not good at this.”
“Slow down. Just because she kissed you doesn’t mean you have to immediately pursue a relationship with her. You said she kissed you on the cheek?”
“Yeah. I’ve never dated anyone in my life, Steve. What does that kind of kiss mean?”
“She was probably just trying to be nice. Maybe she’s playing coy as well. Girls like to be cute sometimes, so try to not think so much of it- especially since it was just on the cheek.”

“Are you sure?” Adam asks. Steve raises his arms above his head to stretch out his muscles, which are fairly prominent. In the dim moonlight, his chest looks average; not too built, but not too flat either. Steve is the kind of guy who enjoys working out fairly regularly, and so both his chest and arms have developed some definition and tone over time. “I’m positive. It’s like I told you before, try not to overthink it. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to be friends with Anna, but don’t get too ahead of yourself.”
“Thanks.” Adam starts to yawn. “I think I’m ready to go to sleep now.”
“Anytime, man. Good night.” Steve places a hand on Adam’s shoulder and they share a moment, smiling at each other. Before he exits the bedroom, Adam faces Steve one last time and says “good night.”

CHAPTER 6: BOSS

Beck has gone back to Connecticut after staying a couple extra days with Anna, and so those daunting feelings of loneliness were starting to slowly creep back into Anna’s mind. On the day of Beck’s departure, she said “remember, I’m only a phone call away. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you ever want to talk.” The thought was still strong in her mind, and as soon as her hand came in contact with her cell phone, the doorbell sounded. Anna rolled her eyes and walked on over to answer the door. “Who is it?” She checked the peephole before unlocking the door and saw that her ex-husband, of all people, was standing on her front porch.

ADAM

It’s been less than twenty-four hours and Adam still felt like a half-dead zombie on the inside. He struggled to get through the day at work, his eyes coming in and out of sleep as he looked at the computer screen on his desk. I should have just called out sick, he said to himself. I can’t go through any more of these files. After a few more clicks of the mouse, his head fell flatly onto his keyboard, and the screen started to fill up with a bunch of random O’s and D’s. He started to snore, which caught the attention of a co-worker from the next desk over. “Adam?” The young man lightly shook his shoulder, which made Adam jolt up in sudden awareness. “Huh? What happened?”
“You fell asleep. Be grateful the boss didn’t see you nodding off.”
“Oh. Thanks.” Adam adjusted his seat and tried to sit up. Just as he got comfortable, Mr. Hatfield stormed through the front entrance, clearly not seeming to be in a good mood. Everybody in the office space avoided eye contact, keeping their heads low and backs hunched over their computers. Adam seemed to not take notice of Mr. Hatfield’s existence, and so he scratched his nose and tilted his head back and forth before returning his focus to the computer screen. Great, now I have to use the bathroom. Adam got up from his seat and headed towards the front door, but before he could leave, he saw Mr. Hatfield standing right in front of him. “Um, weren’t you just over there?” Adam asked, motioning over to where his office is on the far left. “Where do you think you're going, young man?”
  “To the restroom, sir.”
“No, you’re not. No one’s allowed to take bathroom breaks! Am I clear on that?” The man bent over, leaning in until his eyes were locked in with Adam’s. “But, but, I can’t hold it.”
“Then use a cup or bowl from the break room in the back corner! You’re not allowed to leave this space.” Adam sighed and went back to his desk, knowing it would be useless to argue with his boss. Once he sat back down at his desk, he leaned over to say something to his co-worker. Mr. Hatfield then bellowed in a voice that startled everybody. “Mr. Burke, could you meet me in my office please?” Adam let out a sigh and slowly made his way towards his office. Once he sat down in one of the leather chairs facing his desk, the tall man followed and took a seat in his chair. The two of them sat in uncomfortable silence, and Adam had his eyes looking in every other direction except for his boss’ face. “Adam Burke… Do you want to know why I called you into my office?”
“No, not really.” Mr. Hatfield let out a sigh of frustration. “Fine, I’ll tell you then. I’m a man of high importance. This company is something I built and grew with no one else to help me but myself. This office is just one of many buildings I own, and so that means I own you as well.”
“What’s your point, sir?”
“Don’t talk back to me!” Nathaniel Hatfield’s left eye started to twitch upon hearing Adam’s remark. “You WILL respect me. Am I making myself clear?” Adam let out a slight groan and said “yes”. Sometimes, Adam started to think to himself, I can’t help but wonder why I took up this position, working for a man who cares about no one but himself. “As I was saying,” Mr. Hatfield started to say. Adam started to tune out his lecturing, knowing that the man could talk about himself for hours before getting to his point. After his boss was done talking, Adam realized that the man was waiting for him to respond. “Uh huh, I understand,” he said without any care behind his words. “Good.” Mr. Hatfield opened up the front door of his office and motioned for Adam to leave. “You can go now. I expect you to behave and not get on my nerves again.”

CHAPTER 7: SURPRISES

Anna’s shock left her paralyzed yet again as both she and her ex-husband were standing on the front porch in uncomfortable silence. If it were any other day when she was still in a traumatized state, her reaction probably would have been anything but pleasant. Her emotions right now however seemed to only lead to numbness and confusion. She didn’t understand why he was here. The silence was broken when Seth stepped into the room once Anna opened the door. “I like how spacious this place is. Has it always been like this?” Anna walked up from behind and motioned for him to take a seat on the nearby chair. “No, I called in some renovators so that they can take out a wall or two.”
  “I see.”
“Do you want something to drink?”
“Sure. Water is fine.” Anna came back into view from the kitchen with a glass of ice water and laid it on the side table. She then sat down on the couch, just a couple inches away from Seth. The two of them felt uneasy in each other’s presence since they knew they had once been married, but the baggage that came with it is what made this visit feel even more awkward, especially in Anna’s case. She was surprised that nothing yet has triggered her on the inside of her mind, and she felt as if she should be treating him like a guest instead of like a friend. Seth took out his phone to quickly check his messages, though he knew the real reason for checking it so that he could escape the awkward silence that continued to float in the air. He wasn’t sure why he decided to show up on Anna’s doorstep other than for this nagging thought that lingered in his mind every night since what happened back then. He thought for sure that she would reject any reasoning for letting him into her house. Just as he was about to get up and show himself out, he saw Anna curled up on the other side of the couch, not saying a word and rocking back and forth slightly. “I’m sorry for showing up so suddenly. I feel like I should leave, but I guess I just wanted to see you again. I wanted to make sure you felt safe.” She didn’t respond, but she looked like she was about to pass out. Her skin became pale upon hearing the word “safe” and she buried her face from view. I shouldn’t have come here, Seth thought to himself. What person decides to see an ex-lover after treating them so horribly? She doesn’t deserve this. She doesn’t deserve me. Seth stepped out onto the porch and shut the door behind him, knowing that the person he thought he loved will forever feel alone in his presence.

CHAPTER 8: MISERY

As things at work became more cold and unbearable, Adam’s mood continued to fluctuate between tired, irritated and hopeless. He knew that he should just leave. He shouldn’t let his own fears or doubts plague him, and yet for some reason, he feels like he has no other choice. His parents have never given him a hard time about his decisions in life. Sure, Steve can be a bit insensitive at times, but they’ve known each other for a long time and he knows that they’d always be there for each other. Adam’s thoughts about his life only added to his misery, and so instead of going to his usual hangout, he decided to go somewhere else. He didn’t feel like drinking tonight; it would only worsen his headache. Out of impulse, he started up his car and decided to let the wheel dictate where he should go. Take me anywhere but here, he said to himself. His eyesight was in a blur, and yet, he managed to not take any damage to his car or hurt anyone else in his path. Once he recognized the street that led into his neighborhood, he parked his car in what he thought was his house. He walked up to the front porch and took his keys out, and once he heard the door open, some awareness came back to him as well as some confusion. “Adam? Is that you?” He didn’t say anything, but once he could make out the couch, he walked towards it and then fell face first onto it. He couldn’t bear to say anything, but he let out a slight groan. A figure came up closer to him and nudged his shoulder, making sure he was still conscious. “Adam? It’s me, Anna. Why are you in my house?”

Once he had rolled over to where he was facing the ceiling, Anna made direct contact with him and stared into his eyes. She took off his glasses, but he didn’t seem to notice or care that much. It wasn’t until she slapped him in the face that he became more aware of where he was. He groaned out of pain this time and said “I’m sorry, Anna. I didn’t mean to barge into your house like this.”
  “Why exactly are you here?”
“I don’t know. I didn’t expect my key to fit into your keyhole. I guess whoever issues these things didn’t do a good job at differentiating my house from yours?” Anna made a face and stayed in place, standing just inches away from where he was sitting. She was more confused than scared knowing she had been around Adam before, but still, part of her felt vulnerable. She hadn’t fully recovered from her panic attack from when Seth stopped by earlier in the day.

The clock on the wall above the hallway entrance read 7:45, and both Adam and Anna sat in comfortable silence, which made Anna feel more at ease than she did a couple hours ago when Adam first showed up. She didn’t want to ask him any personal questions as she could tell he wasn’t in the best of places, but she did offer to get dinner for him. Once she placed an order and both of them had eaten, she decided to turn on the TV, but she couldn’t find anything good to watch. A slow moment passed and Adam inched closer to Anna out of nervousness, which made her feel awkward. Her shoulders tensed up until she saw the look in his eyes. He didn’t have to say anything to let her know that he just wanted some comfort after a long day, so she relaxed her shoulders and let him sit close to her. The silence between them continued to feel comfortable, and neither one of them felt the need to break it. However, once the clock started to inch towards 11:30 at night, Adam started to feel uncomfortable. He’s never stayed in a girl’s house for this long, and the more time he spent with Anna, the more he wanted to just be around her. Her presence had this calming effect on him, and due to his lack of dating experience, he couldn’t tell if this was a good sign or not. All he knows is that he really likes her. The two of them smiled at each other from their faraway positions, and in that instant when they met each other glances, Adam got up from the couch and walked towards where Anna was standing in the kitchen. “Hey, do you mind if I just stay here for the night? It would feel wrong to just leave after allowing me to have dinner with you.” Anna paused for a minute before speaking, then said, “Sure. However, I do not want to be in the same room with you. I’m a light sleeper.”
“That’s fine with me. Your couch is really comfortable anyways.” She smiled and left the room to grab a couple spare blankets. Once she came back into view, Adam had already taken his shirt off and she couldn’t help but giggle under her breath. Adam was quick to pick up on that giggle, even if she thought he didn’t hear. “What’s so funny?”
“Nothing.” Anna tried to hide her slight smirk and thought to herself, if Beck was here, she’d probably give him a hard time for being scrawny. His arms in comparison looked slightly built, and she noticed that even his back contained more bone than muscle. She wondered if he once tried to work out but gave up after a couple tries. Wouldn’t surprise me if that’s the case. After placing the blankets down on the couch, she found herself walking towards Adam out of curiosity, but what was driving it exactly? With him standing there with his shirt off, he didn’t move or flinch as she inched closer to him as he was lost in his own world for a moment. His awareness came back into focus however once she touched his shoulder, and he started to feel nervous and shy.

CHAPTER 9: FIRST TIME

Neither Anna or Adam expected to be in this situation where they were laying in bed, no clothes on and just feeling each other’s bodies, but in that moment, they realized that they just feel really comfortable around each other. Anna sat up in bed, staring first at his curly hair, and then directing her gaze into his eyes and trying to study his expressions. She couldn’t figure out if he wanted this solely from the beginning, or if he’s just as shy and timid as she’s feeling right now. Anna knew that the last time she gave part of herself away like this, it wasn’t a choice she had of her own, and so in knowing the choice she made tonight, she kept pondering what this would mean to her and if this is what it’s supposed to feel like. There was no pressure and she took her time, going at her own pace of what felt comfortable for both her and Adam, and he was very respectful of her wishes without even knowing about her history. Just as Adam was about to speak, Anna interjected, “Can I share something personal with you?”
  “Sure. What’s up?”
“When I first moved here, I had no friends. You’ve been very nice and friendly to me as a neighbor and I’m very appreciative of that. I used to be married, and my ex-husband actually showed up earlier in the month. There’s a lot you don’t know about me, but for some reason, being around you has this calming effect on me, like none of that matters except for what’s going on right now. I guess this is all to say that in this moment right now, how I feel is something that I haven’t felt in a long time. Thank you for being someone who has a different and more positive effect on me.” She smiled timidly, and Adam stared at her, looking confused at first, but then letting out a sigh and small smile. It’s true that he doesn’t know a lot about Anna, so by sharing these experiences in a vague manner, this gave him the chance to really connect with her for the first time. “I feel like I should be thanking you, Anna, but I don’t know what for. I don’t have a lot of experience when it comes to this. I’ve been single for as long as I can remember; I never really dated anybody in school. I have to admit that sitting this close to you in a shared space makes me feel a little nervous, but somehow, you have a way of making me feel more at ease, like I can just relax and be myself. I really appreciate you being open and honest with me.” The two of them shared a genuine smile towards each other, and then before Adam could think, he leaned in close to kiss Anna. The first one was like a small peck, and Anna could feel a sense of yearning in the way he kissed her, so in return, she kissed him back with a little more passion behind it. Adam didn’t react immediately, but once he did, the two of them kept their lips pressed together, each kiss becoming more passionate than the next one as if they finally understood each other, wanting to savor this moment forever.

Novella #4: Mysteries in Love (part 2)

CHAPTER 2: AWAKE

Anna wakes up in a cold sweat, and her first instinct is to call Keith or Beck, but then she realizes that she had only experienced a nightmare. In her mind however, all nightmares feel like reality since they take her back to the past when she was married to that monster. The fear of reliving that trauma sometimes keeps her awake all hours of the night, and once she does fall asleep, it’s only for three or four hours at a time. Sometimes, the only thing that keeps her fear and anxiety at bay is by not associating the name of the threat for what it is. He who should not be named, or “the monster” she tells herself, trying to force away those past memories.

ADAM

Whenever Adam was at his boring office job, he would allow his thoughts to drift off to that night of the party. He wanted to know so much more about Anna, and thinking of her would make him mull over his past failed relationships. It’s not like him to throw pity parties for himself, but on this particular afternoon, he just felt more anxious and uneasy than usual, and so he impulsively decided to drive to a bar. All it took for him to get drunk was three shots, and the bartender had to wake him up after an hour and a half had passed. Once Adam took note of the time on his phone, he called up a friend to come get him. Which friend he called was of no concern to him- not that he didn’t enjoy hanging out with both Steve and Chase, but ever since Steve found himself a girlfriend, he hasn’t been acting like his usual self. Once the phone rang, Steve’s voice filled the receiver. “Are you at a bar?”
  “Yeah. What of it?”
“You really shouldn’t be hanging out over there. You never know what kind of weirdos are over there stirring up trouble.” Adam rolled his eyes at the comment and rudely said “Thanks, Dad. When will I be able to speak to Steve, the best friend?”
“I’m just trying to help out here.”
“If you want to help me, then perhaps you can stop nagging me and get over here.”
“Okay, Mr. Attitude. I’ll be there in the next few minutes.” Once Steve had pulled up to the front of the bar, Adam made his way into the passenger’s seat. “Are you sure there’s nothing going on with you? I’m not here to be bossy or get on your nerves…”
“Oh, so now you’re deciding to be my friend?”
“Really, Adam? I don’t understand why you keep acting this way around me.”
“Just forget it. You won’t understand.”
“Is that your final answer, or do you want to try again?” Adam didn’t respond, and the two of them sat in the car in silence the rest of the way home. Once Steve put the car in park and they entered their apartment, Chase greeted them with some non-alcoholic drinks and a couple game controllers. “Tonight’s the night guys, so I want you to put aside your differences and get along for once. Can you do that for me?”
“That’s fine with me,” Steve said as he took a sip of his drink. “Do you think you can handle that, Adam?” Adam offered a snicker in Steve’s direction, which made Chase cock his eyebrow. He then laughed in amusement and said “sometimes I really wonder why you have to be immature, but none of that matters tonight! Are y'all ready to slay the final beast in Gandall’s Horn? It’s going to be a challenge like no other!” The three guys clinked their glasses together as a toast before sitting down, took one last sip and then started up the game.

CHAPTER 3: MOVE

When Anna first moved from her small house in back Connecticut, she knew she wanted a place that’s comfortable, yet spacious. Having never experienced living in an apartment, she knew that it would be more suitable for her to save up for a house in a neighborhood. The idea of living in an apartment always made her feel anxious and uncomfortable, and when Keith brought that up as an option, she immediately started to feel dizzy. “Okay, so we won’t go that route. I’m sorry if I hit a nerve there.” After a couple minutes of regaining her composure, she offered a small smile, knowing it wasn’t his fault.

CONNECTICUT, 1990

Beck is the only family that Anna has since both her parents died a few years after she was born. Growing up, her older sister was someone she greatly admired as she always showed great strength. She also told great stories, and whenever Anna felt scared or sad, Beck would always show great loyalty and comfort her until she felt better. One instance of this is when six-year-old Anna found a snapping turtle while playing outside in the rain. Anna was a bit more fearless at that age and would play outside no matter what the weather conditions were, and when she found the turtle, she got so excited and wanted to bring it home to show Beck. The minute she stuck her hand out, the turtle stuck its head out and bit the tip of her pinky finger, making her jump and quickly run back inside the house. After shutting the door and taking off her raincoat, she trudged into the kitchen with tears in her eyes, telling her sister to kiss her injury. “It hurts so bad, Beck. Why did the turtle have to be mean?”
“Well little sis, that wasn’t just an ordinary turtle you found. You’ll have to be more careful next time, but I’m sorry he bit you.” Anna fiddled with the band-aid that her sister put on her finger before jumping off the kitchen island.

The relationship that Beck and Anna had as children remained strong until Beck decided to move out and attend college for her law degree. It had always been a goal she had in mind, getting her degree and becoming a lawyer, but because both of them had to rely on each other for the first several years of life, Beck would spend her days caring for Anna, and then reserving her studies in school for the evenings after her sister was asleep. It would have been foolish for Beck to admit that she didn’t care or didn’t want to stay with her sister, but at the same time, she knew that she wanted a life of her own, hoping that Anna would one day be able to achieve the same thing. When she found out about her marrying Seth in the middle of her senior year of high school, she had her suspicions and worries. For one, Anna still had yet to graduate, and she had only been dating Seth for a year and a half. Adding onto those feelings of worry was that even though she wanted to believe that Seth was a good person, something about him just didn’t seem quite right. At the time, Beck couldn’t figure out what that was, and so she didn’t say anything in fear of losing her sister out of anger or haste. The two of them relied on each other so much growing up, and when she finally moved out of her childhood home, the two girls just fell out of communication with each other.

PRESENT DAY

Anna was enjoying some time in the shade of her backyard, listening to the birds and taking in the moment when she noticed something rustling around in a bush. At first the movement startled her, but then she relaxed herself when she realized it was just a squirrel scurrying around, trying to find an acorn or some other food to munch on. A slow minute passed and another sound startled her, and so she decided to get up and go back inside her house. Sometimes even on a good day when the weather’s nice, the littlest things can make Anna feel scared or anxious. When she opened the sliding door that led into the living room, she noticed a shadow lurking by the front door, or at least, she thought she did. She slowly crept into the kitchen, making sure to not make a sound as she took each step. Once she came into focus of the kitchen island, her eyes widened in bewilderment and confusion.
“Hey, I’m sorry to come in unannounced or for not calling in advance. I just wanted to see you.”
“Um… I don’t know what to say. Hi?” Beck offered a smile, but her sister couldn’t move a muscle on her face or in her legs. “Do you want to sit down, sis? Or should I pick you up like old times?” The thought made Beck chuckle under her breath, but Anna still didn’t say anything in return. “Look, I’m sorry if my presence startled you, but really, I just wanted to see you. It’s been too long.”
“You think?” Anna mutters. “You left me when I was eighteen. I had no one, and even after Seth and I got married and moved out, things weren’t as peachy as you may think.”
“I’m sorry!” Beck takes a few steps back, throwing her hands up in an act of guilt that remains apparent not just in her face, but also in her heart. “There are so many things I should have said to you back then. I should have told you sooner what was going on with me, and I should have reached out to you more often.” Anna stood frozen still, trying to process everything that had happened to her in the last several years of her existence after her sister had left. Part of her wanted to feel more angry, but instead, she just felt numb; maybe even a little hurt and betrayed. Between the trauma of what happened with Seth and the hurt she felt while seeing her sister after so long, part of her just wanted to run and hide. Instead, she felt as if every bone in her body was frozen in paralysis and she didn’t know how to move.
“Are you okay, Anna? You don’t look so good.” Silence. She couldn’t speak, and seeing Beck standing in front of her just put Anna in total shock. After a slow two minutes passed, Beck moved closer to her sister and put her arms around her. She could feel Anna trembling slightly, and the more she inched closer, she could feel and hear the pain in Anna’s stifled crying. Beck knew she would never understand what she’s been through, but in this moment right now, she could tell that her sister needed her now more than ever.

CHAPTER 4: STRUGGLES

Adam, Steve and Chase have been sharing a house together for nearly three years now, and while the three of them do enjoy being around each other, they bicker and argue just like any group of friends would. The only thing that’s made things more challenging recently is adjusting to Steve being the first in the group to have a girlfriend, and the way he talks about her makes Adam and Chase realize that he’s serious about his commitment and wants to eventually marry her. More so, it makes Adam realize just how jealous he may be feeling on the inside, though he would never admit that to Steve or even to himself sometimes. Maybe this is why he’s suddenly taken an interest in the new girl next door.

Adam was an only child growing up, and both his parents have careers that keep them super busy, and so a lot of his time was spent alone. His many hobbies and interests, which range from vintage cars and video games to anime and creating his own manga stories, give him enough to never seem bored or lonely on the outside, but since moving into this house three years ago, he’s been struggling to feel more secure within himself. These days, he doesn’t get into his other hobbies much like researching vintage cars or writing stories, but occasionally when he’s not working, he will find a new anime to watch. It was his interest in anime that led him to become friends with Steve at age eleven, and they’ve been close ever since. Chase didn’t come into the picture though until after he entered college his senior year of high school. Chase was part of the same dual academic enrollment program that year, and while the program gave him a lot of opportunities to get into a prestigious college of his choice while also receiving a scholarship, none of the colleges who asked to interview Adam really caught his interest. What he wanted to do instead was just not attend college at all and become his own boss, though the plan was never really well thought out.

Seeing that Adam could never make a solid plan work out, Steve had tried helping him multiple times with his exit plan for after graduation, but at the last minute, Adam had lost his nerve and started doubting himself. Being alone as much as he had growing up, this rarely gave him the opportunity to talk about his own emotional needs, and so this is a struggle that remains present in his life to this day. “Hey Steve, can I get some advice from you about something?”
“Sure man, what can I help you with?”
“Well before I say anything, will you promise to not judge me in any way?” Steve took a moment to pause before answering, and then he nodded his head in silence. “I know that we tend to butt heads sometimes, but ultimately, I do trust you. There’s this new girl next door and I’ve been wanting to get to know more about her. When she came over to the house a couple weeks ago, I found out that her name is Anna, but that’s all I know. I just want to know how to get closer to her…” Steve considered Adam’s words for a bit before giving a response. The silence was making Adam feel more nervous, but then it was broken when Steve asked “Are you into this girl, like romantically?”
“No. What gives you that idea?”
“Well, you haven’t mentioned this girl to either me or Chase at all until now. If you are interested in her in that way, then I wouldn’t want to give you any bad advice.”
“Dude, I just want to be friends with her.”
“Okay, I didn’t know!” Steve flashes a quirky smile and throws his hands up in surrender, tilting his chair back a bit before sitting up again. “You know, for someone who’s serious about marrying a girl you’ve been dating for only two years, you sure love to make assumptions. What do you know about Hannah anyways?”
“What does that have to do with anything? Besides, my relationship with Hannah is none of your business.”
“Are you going to give me advice or not?”
“I will give you advice after you apologize for that remark.” Adam rolls his eyes and mutters an apology under his breath, which Steve doesn’t hear. “Would you mind speaking up a bit? I can’t hear you.” Adam sighs gruffly and then finally says, “I’m sorry. Are we cool now?”
“I don’t know why you keep giving me this attitude, Adam. I honestly feel insulted by you bringing up my relationship with Hannah, which has nothing to do with your situation. You say you want to become friends with this girl, correct?”
  “Yes!”
“Then first off, learn to be more open with others without getting all defensive. It’s okay if you feel nervous, anxious or shy.” Hearing this makes Adam’s eyes widen for a moment as this is the first time Steve has ever said something that made him feel seen or heard. “Thank you. Hearing you saying that means a lot.” Steve smiles and lays a hand on Adam’s shoulder, realizing that he’s finally said something right. “I’m here for you, man. We’re like brothers, and so if you really want to be friends with this girl, then I’ll give you my full support. You said she lives next door, right?”
“Yes. I just don’t know how to make that first move, though.”
“Don’t overthink it. If this is something you want, then all you have to do is go up there and say hi. Maybe even offer a housewarming gift to help break the ice.”
“That’s actually a good idea. Got any suggestions?” Adam stared at his friend for a moment, expecting Steve to have some sort of answer. It was then when Steve realized just how lonely his childhood must have been, and vowed to himself to be a better friend and brother. The two of them have been through so much together growing up; it’s the least he could do for Adam.

ANNA

Anna and her sister had spent the day together out in the city. They stopped by a few vintage shops in the area, and once they felt tired and hungry enough, they decided to bring some Thai food back to Anna’s house. The girls dropped their shopping bags off by the front door; Beck was eagerly talking about some of the great purchases she made. “I can’t wait to see the look on Eliza’s face when she sees what I got her! You remember me mentioning Eliza from school, right?” Anna chuckles at her sister’s delight and pulls her in for a hug. “I’ve missed this. I’m really glad you’re here.” Beck smiles in return and places her purse on the bar stool under the kitchen island. Since moving into the house, Anna has been slowly adding in more pieces of furniture to help liven up the space. The entire kitchen is about as big as an indoor swimming pool with the dining area being placed adjacent to the opening of the living room. One accommodation Anna knew she wanted was an open floor plan with not too many walls, and so she had called in some help to remove the wall that keeps the living room and kitchen area separate. She even asked to have the kitchen island be modified so that she can fit bar stools underneath. Originally, it was the same length as the structure it was standing on, rectangular and tight on all corners. This way, she can have people over if she ever got lonely, but of course, she doesn’t know anybody in this neighborhood.

Just as Beck and Anna started to settle in on the couch in the living room with their food, there was a knock on the door. Both of them stared at each other looking confused, and then Anna stood up to see who was knocking. At first she didn’t recognize him through the peephole, but once she saw the curly hair and glasses, she remembered and opened the door. “Hey, what are you doing here?”
“I-I just wanted to say hi and give you this.” He stuck out his arms, gesturing the basket of goodies in Anna’s direction. She gave a brief smile and took the basket, offering him to come inside. “Your name is Adam, right?”
“Y-yes. And yours is Anna, right?” Adam’s face starts to turn red, and he isn’t sure if Anna can tell. “Do you want to come inside and join us?”
“Oh, you have another visitor?”
“It’s just my sister. Beck, come here!” Beck got up from her seat and walked up to Anna’s side to introduce herself, shaking Adam’s hand and making a gesture to have him come in and make himself comfortable. “Do you want anything to drink or eat? We have plenty of Thai food!”
“Oh, it’s fine. I just wanted to stop by and give Anna the housewarming gift. I realized I never gave her a proper welcome.”
“Well isn’t that thoughtful?” Beck’s expressions towards Adam made him laugh a little, which helped to ease his anxious thoughts.
“I don’t want to overstay my welcome, but I appreciate you letting me stay for a little bit.”
“Wait! Before you leave…” Anna starts to say. “I want to give you something. Close your eyes.” Adam found the request to be odd, but he decided to go along with it. He started to tense up again when he felt something quickly brush along his cheek, and then his face grew red again. Once he opened his eyes, he felt confused and asked, “What was that? I don’t see anything that I can take home with me.”
“That’s because I gave you a kiss, silly.” Anna and Beck started to softly giggle like schoolgirls while Adam just stood there looking oblivious. “I really appreciate you stopping by, Adam. No one has thought to give me a welcome basket since I first moved here, so the gesture means a lot to me.”
“Oh… well, it’s my pleasure. I’ll see you later, okay?” Once he exited through the front door and shut it behind him, Adam had to stop a moment and sit on their front porch to take in what just happened. He didn’t expect the new girl to just kiss him like that, and why was she and her sister giggling while he had his eyes closed? Did her sister put Anna up to some kind of challenge, or did she do that on her own accord? So many questions started running through his mind and he found his cheeks turning red. No one has ever kissed me before… like, ever, he thought to himself. Deep down, he had to admit that he kind of liked it.

Novella #4: Mysteries in Love

CHAPTER 1: ANNA

She’s lived on her own, isolated from the outside world for the past three years. Having just recovered from an abusive marriage and settling into a small, comfortable house in a new neighborhood, the only thing she knows she wants is to feel safe and comfortable.

The move-in process still being in a halfway stage, her house is furnished with some basic furniture pieces like a couch, two chairs, a simple dining set and a bed. There are still some boxes stacked in various places in the entryway, kitchen and bedroom, but there is a small vase of flowers that was a housewarming gift from her sister Beck.

The clock on the oven reads 8:00 pm and Anna is finishing up her leftover Chinese food for dinner. Just as she was heading towards the kitchen to throw away the takeout containers, she heard some loud music playing. She shrugs it off until the volume increases, followed by some male voices screaming loudly. She grows annoyed and wonders if she should call the cops, but instead, she decides to walk over to the neighboring house and investigate the situation herself. Upon knocking on the door, it opens itself and Anna shyly walks inside. The music is deafening to her ears, but she walks on and finds that the source of the commotion is inside the common space and backyard patio. Just as she begins to let her guard down, someone bumps into her and she lands on the floor.

“How is she doing?” an unfamiliar voice asks. “Do I need to call an ambulance?” “Let’s wait and see if she wakes up first.” another voice says. Anna finally comes back into consciousness, having no idea what just happened. The only thing she’s able to see is a young, handsome face looking at her. She can see through his glasses that his eyes are a mix of green and brown, and his curly hair sits perfectly just a few inches above his shoulders. “She’s fine, guys. Give her some space, please?” The stranger helps Anna up to her feet and everyone suddenly disperses, suddenly realizing that no real danger is present.

Before the young man can get any other words in, Anna interjects. “I should get back home. It’s late. Thank you for helping by the way.”
“Wait, what’s the rush? Can I at least get your name?” The young stranger’s presence makes Anna lose her senses for a moment and she introduces herself, but then she remembers the original intent of her being in this house and starts to feel awkward. “I really should be heading home now. Thanks again.”
“No problem, Anna.” He smiles at her, and Anna starts heading towards the door.

FIVE YEARS AGO

“Babe, just keep your eyes closed. I don’t want you ruining the surprise.”
“I can’t wait any longer, Seth. Just tell me what the surprise is!” Anna squeals as she keeps her hands over her face. Dinner has been set on the table, the arrangement consisting of all of her favorite dishes: spaghetti squash, a big bowl of greens tossed into a salad and a 3-tiered chocolate cake. WIth her eyes shut, Anna has no idea that all of this food is for her. Once Seth finally turns her around and opens her eyes, she starts jumping up and down in full delight. The two of them sit down and load up their plates. Everything about this night is just perfect, Anna says to herself. The minute the thought is gone however, she feels a slight tinge of worry. I hope Seth hasn’t done anything wrong….
The two of them eat in silence for a bit, and then Seth suddenly excuses himself from the table. “I can’t do this.”
“What do you mean? You cooked all of this food for me. Tonight is perfect.”
“I know, and I’m glad you’re happy.” Seth gives a small grin, but Anna is able to see past this.
“You know you can talk to me, right?”
“No.”
“Well, I’m here for you. You can trust me.” Seth doesn’t respond for a long while, and the two of them stare at each other, Anna’s expression dumbfounded. She doesn’t know what could be going on inside her husband’s head, but before she could finish her current bite of food, Seth takes her hand and says, “why don’t we just forget about dinner and go to bed?”
“It’s only 7:00, hun. The sun hasn’t even fully set yet.”
“I want to go to bed, Anna. That’s not a request.” The sudden firmness in his tone struck her silent, and so she obediently went upstairs with him and they laid together in bed, keeping some space between them. Just as Anna started to doze off, Seth was fully naked and mounting his body on top of hers. At first she didn’t move a muscle and laid perfectly still, but after hearing the sounds of duct tape being ripped apart, her eyes widened and realized she couldn’t make any sound. Why is this happening? Anna started frantically mumbling as she squirmed on top of the bed. Even her hands were bound by the tape, and she couldn’t find any trace of Seth in the bedroom. After a few slow minutes passed, he showed up in view. He didn’t say a word as he climbed back into bed. He first caressed his wife’s cheek, and then he made his way down to her chest. Anna’s body began to tense up, and she tried to squirm free which made her husband’s temper worsen. Every time she moved or so much screamed from behind the tape, he would hit her in the ribs or on the face. His fists were so powerful against her skin that at one point, blood started to form out of the corner of her eye. Did he just punch me close to my temple? she asked herself. Fear, anger and confusion made her thrash around more violently, and her cries only made the situation worse as Seth tore off her clothes and clenched her skin violently, hitting her and violating Anna in places that only made her cry and scream at a pitch that was deafening to his ears. “You don’t have to like it, but you will do what I say.” Seth growled. He rips the tape off of her mouth and Anna starts tearing up, and the sight of her crying makes him convulse, his expression twisting up into a snarl of disgust. He slaps her on the face where the bloody spot on her temple had dried and a new gash starts coming out.

If the first fit of screams didn’t wake up the neighbors next door, the second round surely did as Seth continued to sexually torture Anna. Her wails grew more hysterical and she kicked him in the nuts, which made her husband fall to the floor unconscious. Right after seeing him lay on the floor, Anna tried to unbind herself when Mr. Keith burst through the front door of the house and hurriedly walked up to the bedroom door. He noticed Seth on the ground and asked what had happened, but she was too traumatized to find the words to explain the situation. He then noticed that she was bleeding from her temple and dialed 911 into his cell phone. Once he hung up and finished the call, he put his arms around her and tried to comfort as she cried in his arms. Keith could feel her trembling and shaking, and so he grabbed a blanket from off the floor and wrapped it around her. “You’re alive, Anna, and I’m here for you. I’m not going anywhere. You’re safe with me.”

For the next five to six months after that night, Keith allowed Anna to stay at his house. When he told his wife about what happened, she was just as sympathetic and willing to help Anna move on and start a new life for herself. They gave her her own cell phone and debit card. They also had an emergency fund set up for her just in case. “I doubt that Seth will try to track you down, but if he does, this will be of good use.” Anna nodded and offered a small smile, expressing thanks without having to say it. The day she left, she felt mostly confident, but she knew she would miss the kindness that her neighbors freely expressed and gave when they temporarily took her in. "We’re just a phone call away if you ever need anything,” Keith said as they stood on the front steps of their doorway. Anna smiled and leaned in to hug both him and his wife. “Thank you. I feel like I can’t say that enough.”
“It was our pleasure. Come back any time if you feel unsafe or need company, okay?”
“I’ll try my best. Thanks again.” Hugs were spread around again and then Anna stepped onto the passenger seat of the taxi cab.
